FITC 2007 - Over and Out

As always, I have some ridiculous pictures up on my flickr account.
I'm back home from FITC in Toronto trying to get caught up on everything since time just seems to stall when you are away. There was some pretty fantastic presos at FITC this year - technically one of my faves was the one about Red5 with John and Chris - they showed some really cool stuff with various inputs - from the guitar hero styles to the wiimote drum playing. Not to be missed of course, was the Maeda presenation - a very relaxed and off the cuff presenter and it really made for a great closing to what was a very busy conference.

I'll be posting my files from my preso tonight, since the flaky internet connection at the conference meant downloading/uploading wasn't entirely pleasant. All files will be available at www.bitchwhocodes.com/fitc2007

As for my presentation - I think it went alright. It was a packed room ( well in all fairness I was in the smallest room, so does that mean much?), some people even sitting on the floor. I managed to swear a couple times in the first 5 mins and even slip in a "crap yer pants". But all in all, a few laughs were had, some information exchanged and I think it was good once I loosened up a bit. And of course, I spent a bit of time today fixing some stuff in my code samples before I post them - all I gotta say is don't code while on Nyquil. Really not a good idea. :) Do as I say...not as I do?

I'd like to thank everyone who attended my session - it was really a lot of fun, and just in general, thank FITC for having me. Its a conference I love, and to be able to present at it, is certainly an honor.

Your presentation was pretty awesome and definitely stood out for me. Thank you! I look forward to moving into ActionScript 3.0 and I think after seeing at least 3 different sessions on migrating to 3.0, it has made me more comfortable with it.

Hey!

I personnaly really enjoyed your presentation.

We did the transition from Director to Flash over the last 2 years and i was surprised to see so much of "Director" people in the room! I felt less weirdo! ;)

Flash mx 2004 with components and as2 was the first release that we where able to consider good enough to do the transition for our projects (we still have to support desktop app). And because we are working on long term project, it's not always possible to ditch the technologies as soon as they are out and keep up. The cost of porting is not always worth it (ie. it's not two days coded demo that we have to transition, but prodution tools, application, done by a team over a long time range, etc).

Anyway, so we currently have to choose if we transition or not to AS3. It's clear that it's not just a open and save. The performances and api's pluses are quite obvious, but what else?

At Grant Skinner presentation, i realised that the tree component is not even in the new components!! Bouh!!

So... your presentation was very clear, to the point (not just on the marketing "new features", but the actual differences) and i'm convinced that it will save me alot of times of finding them by myself. You where also really right about some of the more solid stuff cutting alot of the rapid prototyping abilities. Developers that have never worked with director, doesnt have an idea how fast it was to prototype with director and even to run some little scritp using the message window... i still use it to validate text data from a member pasted text or run some commands like chartonum()! ;)

Oh, your presentation was really fun also! It prove that you can be meaninfull and technical without being boring! :)

so I'm totally feeling like AS3 just kicked me in the balls. Did you end up posting the info from FITC? I checked /fitc2007 but nothing yet...
